I have been receiving an amazing number of emails from the readers lately, and these mails consist mainly of three subjects:
?How awesome this blog is and the ways in which it helps them whenever they lose motivation.
?Asking for advice on how to do more things in lesser amount of time
and be more productive.
?How to find out what their passion is.
Since,I put a lot of time and research into my articles,I feel greatly flattered when I receive the first type of emails.
Thank all of you!
The third type of emailers will get their answers soon.
Today,Iam granting the wish of the persons who sent,or are planning to send the third kind of mail, and going to reveal you all the most guarded techniques to increase your productivity by 300 percent and decrease the time spent on them to half and even quarter of the total time they consume now!
These are tips backed by scientific research and a lot of experience so take them as words of gospel.
Let’s become more productive!
What is Parkinson’s Law?
Parkinson’s Law was articulated by Cyril Northcote Parkinson, in the essay published in “The Economist“,a weekly business newspaper, in 1955.
It states that:
“Work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion.”
What this means is that, any work or project taken by you will, either expand or contract according to the time alloted to it.
To give you the law’s greater understanding, let us suppose you are given a project in your college or by your hot-head boss, and he says that you “take your time” and complete it in six months.
Guess what’s going to happen.
It’s going to take you six huge months to complete that single project.
The interesting thing about it is,had your boss given you a deadline of only two days, then you would have completed the entire project in two short days.
This explains the cryptic phenomenon of students who cram up the entire syllabus in short span of one or two days, while their classmates plan and study entire year.
The students who cram the entire subject in two nights are not necessarily any brighter or smarter than the students who study the whole year, they just unknowingly and unintentionally use this law and often score higher than their counterparts.
See,we solved a great mystery!
MY ADVICE TO YOU
This law opens up so many opportunities for you to complete all your work in comparatively lesser amount of time.
“Contract your dead lines.“
If you have decided to complete a work or project in a month, cut it down to a week.
You will be astonished at the results.
Want to learn the entire syllabus in less time?
Throw that silly time-table out of the window!
Set your deadline to learn the entire syllabus in a week (or just two to three days,if you think you can manage),and begin the task.
Surprisingly enough, you will learn your entire subject in a week!
A word about time table -I think that for most guys,time-table is just an illusion they give to themselves, the illusion that they are studying in a managed and disciplined way, when infact, what they do is spend their precious time planning decorating the time table itself.
They work ON the time-table and NOT according to it.
Sad but true.
Work…work and work,and you won’t need a time-table.
To exploit the Parkinson’s Law to it’s full extent, set your goals’,Objectives’ or sub-objectives’ dead lines relatively lesser than they are now and start working on them.
Following this formula, you will think new and improved ways to complete your goals in lesser time, which will accelerate you to your dreams quicker than you had expected.
INSTRUCT YOURSELF OUT LOUD
This one is so great that it will become your favourite habit.
Whenever you are doing a job that gets on your nerves,if you instruct yourself out loud to whatever you are doing and throughout the entire process, you will be more productive at that task and it will be less trite.Added as a bonus side effect, you will NOT get frustrated by the work,no matter how much you hate it.
Don’t believe me?
MY ADVICE TO YOU
Next time, when you are doing something insipid (look this word up in the dictionary,if you don’t know it’s meaning),start giving instructions to yourself out loud (if situation allows) and keep instructing yourself the entire time you do it.
You will be surprised by how well this technique works.
EAT THE FROG!
It was quoted famously by Mark Twain,a real literature genius.
He said that if the first thing you do in the beginning of a day, is eat a live frog, you will go through rest of the day knowing that the worst is behind you.
What does it exactly mean, you ask.
It means that whatever tasks you have before you to accomplish, start with the ones that you absolutely HATE doing.
No matter how much you dislike the task, start the day by completing it,because once you are done with it,you will be mentally liberated from the anxiousness that comes from knowing that you have a work which you hate and which needs to be done.
On the other hand,if you complete your most dreadful and abhorred task, you will be much more productive doing the ones you really enjoy.
You will be able to give your full time and attention to the ones you like.
Ignoring those odd jobs you hate will not make them go away or vanish them into thin air. No,not even the genie of Aladdin can do that.
YOU HAVE TO GO THROUGH IT TO GET RID OF IT.
That is a very profound statement.
You are responsible for every job that comes your way.Ignore them, and they will form a pool of themselves and drown you into it.
Another question,you might have-
What if you have more than one frog, that is what to do when you have more than one boring jobs to finish?
In that case, start with the one which looks worse to you.
Just like when you are given two pills when you are ill–one of a jumbo size and other a small round one.
Which one you gulp down first?
Most people gulp down the one which is bigger in size.
Because, once the bigger problem is out of the way,it’s easier to solve
MY ADVICE TO YOU
Start the day with the tasks you hate the most.
Focus on them and finish them.
Once they are done, you will feel at ease and you will be much attentive to the next jobs or tasks and consequently, you will be more productive doing them.
DO ONLY ONE THING AT A TIME
This should go without saying, but Iam repeating it nonetheless:
FOCUS ONLY AT ONE TASK AT A TIME!
We are designed to do only one task effectively,at any given time. Not saying you cannot do more, you definitely can,but it’s going to be bad.
I mean, how confident you would be in a neuro-surgeon,if he was operating your brain and at the same time, mounting a record in Candy Crush?
Not very,I guess.
Do professors who teach in the class and at the same time, check their phones 50 times, are the ones you are satisfied with?
Focus only at one thing at a time and give your hundred percent to it.
Concentrate your attention to it and do it perfectly.
A task done with dedication and whole-heartedness exudes the fact that you have given your sweat and blood to it.
It is in a totally different league.
Make your accomplished tasks exceptional,so they stand out from the bunch of mediocre work done by others.
Become an example of greatness.
MY ADVICE TO YOU
Don’t even try to be multi-tasking-it’s a myth.
It sounds so good, but it ends there-it just sounds good, but is a baloney.
Multi-tasking,in no way, makes you productive, instead what happens is just the opposite-it makes you less productive and the quality of your work stinks.
I repeat it again-Do only ONE thing at a time!
PLAN FOR THE DAY AHEAD
This is one of the most important tips in the article.
In order for you to become more productive than you are now,you MUST,and I mean SHOULD AND MUST plan for the day ahead on the previous night.
This has personally impacted my work habit in so many ways.
Previously,I always had to juggle the tasks that I had to do in a day.
Ever since I started planning for the day ahead and began creating my ‘to-do-list’ for the next day,on previous night, things just got so
Every task gets accomplished and become almost effortless and at the end of the day,I plan the next day’s jobs and sleep very peacefully, knowing that I did my job and that too with extreme
My increase in productivity became very evident when my friends
started asking me questions like:
“Er…how do you accomplish so much in so little time?” to which I
always smile and shrug.
It’s not a mystery.
People just mis-manage their time and they are very good at it.
They act as if time is abundant and they are immortal.
Reality Check 101– Time is a very very scarce resource.Money, love, fame,
Time is your most valuable asset.
Never give your time to things that don’t help you accomplish your goals.
MY ADVICE TO YOU
Before you go to bed today, sit and enlist your “to-do-list” for the following day.
Give priority to the ones that you must do to further step in the direction of your goals and your vision.
Tasks like ‘checking E-mails,calling your girlfriend/boyfriend,hang out with friends,go for xyz movie’ DON’T qualify. These silly tasks don’t help you move towards your goals, instead they push you away from them.
CREATE THE RIGHT ENVIRONMENT
As a bonus tip, always keep your environment conducive to the work you are involved in.
If you are studying,keep pens,pencils,markers,
Think for yourself,do garages start repairing bikes or cars and then
start finding the tools as they need it along the way?
They keep all the required tools, with themselves on their side so they won’t have to go looking for wrench when they are in the middle of fixing the transport.
Those little moments you spend searching for the objects you need add upto a large amount of time-a time spent on NOTHING productive.
Many a time ,these little distract you from the task at hand and lure you into things that are totally disconnected with your task.
MY ADVICE TO YOU
Before you dive in any of the task to be accomplished, think of everything you will be needing during the process of completion of the task.
Fetch those items and get them ready and only then start the task.
It will save a lot of time and will greatly minimise the distraction that could occur because you will have everything related to complete the task and you won’t have to hunt for it.
So stop wasting your time on useless objectives and start achieving great goals of yours using these techniques.
